Résumé

Indonesia is prone to natural disasters. Therefore, various disaster risk reduction efforts have been promoted to the community. However, the implementation of disaster communication as one of the priority components of disaster risk management efforts has not been effective. Mean while, the increasing number of disaster victims is partly due to ineffective disaster communications. This research aimed at exploring the role of community radio in empowering communities about disaster mitigation activities. This research employed a qualitative approach with a case research method in Garut, West Java, Indonesia.  The findings revealed that, as a medium that was established and managed by the community, community radio hadan important role in empowering the community by improving information literacy of disaster and stimulating their participation to enrich the content of the Radio. Community radio stimulated positive changes in people's behaviour, particularly those in disaster areas. Thus, it can be concluded that community radio could also be used as a potential medium for successful rural and urban development.
