Résumé

Sentence is the basic unit of language, playing a significant part in achieving command of target language. This study is to explore effective sentences in Typhoon, a novella written by Joseph Conrad. Effective sentence is a sentence fulfilling three essential requirements: unity, coherence, and emphasis. The study is qualitative in nature using close reading technique. This study is significant to those who wish to construct effective sentences, paragraphs, and essays in English. Moreover, it is also important to those students who are going to take competitive examinations. It finds sentences in the novella, which meet the stipulations of effective sentences.
