Natural Language Processing in EFL Learning: An Innovative Application of NLP at a Private University in Bangladesh

Résumé

The use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in language learning is not a new thing anymore. Natural Language Processing (NLP), a subfield of AI deals with human language. It has many innovative applications to help language learners in mastering language skills. This study aims at finding out one of such applications; Writing Mentor, which is supported by NLP. English language learners of tertiary level used this application under the supervision of their teacher for four months for practicing writing skill. Afterwards, their opinion was collected using survey questionnaires, interviews and focus group discussions. The learners gave positive feedback about the application and it can be used in improving writing skill. This study concludes with a remark that Natural Language Processing can be very helpful in language learning as it enhances learner autonomy as well as reduces the stress of language teachers in countries like Bangladesh.
